Last spring millions of gallons of oil infiltrated the ocean and caused millions of sea creatures to die. This however, is not the case for the most recent death of fish along a Florida coast. Along the Florida coast on February 4, 2011, thousands of fish washed up on the shore dead. Marine biologists say that they were in a school of at least one million fish. Many residents were shocked and said they had never seen anything like this before. Florida fish and wildlife biologist went to the beach and took water samples to see if the water was contaminated. They first thought it may have had something to due with chemicals, but after a while, they realized that it was because of the lack of oxygen in the water. There were so many fish in the school that the closer they got to the shoreline, they closer they got to their death. There were so many fish that the water turnover rate could not have been high enough to give them enough oxygen. This certain type of fish is prone to dying from lack of oxygen, and there are still worries about the survivor fish from this group that is still out there near this coast. Some of the Florida Fish and Wildlife biologists worry that those fish may die soon if they do not move on to another part of the ocean.
